To upgrade from Japanese Tool version 1.1 or 1.0 you must first uninstall the earlier version of Japanese Tool.
However, if you added your own notes or made a vocabularly list in version 1.1, uninstalling Japanese Tool will lose your data.
To maintain your data through the upgrade, follow these instructions:
- Find the "Effective Language" directory inside your Program Files directory (usually C:\Program Files\Effective Language\)
- Find the "Japanese Tool" directory within the "Effective Language" directory
- Copy the file "JapaneseDictionary.mdb" to your desktop
- Uninstall Japanese Tool 1.1
- Install the new Japanese Tool 1.2
- Start Japanese Tool and then exit it
- Find the "Application Data" directory within your home directory. This is usually C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\, where "USERNAME" is the name of the account that you logged in from. (Note: this directory is hidden by default)
- Open the directory "Effective Language" within the Application Data directory
- Copy your original "JapaneseDictionary.mdb" into the "Japanese Tool" directory within the "Effective Language" directory. Note that you will be asked whether or not to replace the newer file with the same name. Select yes.
- Start Japanese Tool again. Your original vocabulary data and notes will appear.
I apologize for the difficult upgrade process. Japanese Tool version 1.2 is designed in such a way that upgrades from 1.2 to future versions will preserve all of your vocabulary and notes automatically.
